Guru Joe represents KunTao Silat deThouars in the greater Chicago area. A thirty-year player of martial arts Guru Joe bridges the gap between traditional knowledge and modern training methods. As a young Judoka and bare-knuckle Kenpo student, Joe encountered Willem ‘Uncle Bill’ deThouars and one of his students. The experience made him realize that not only was there a lot to learn in the martial arts, he wasn’t going to learn it where he was studying. This started a decades long search for the pure combat simplicity he found in Bapak Willem deThouars teachings. While he has collected a lot of ‘wallpaper’ in different exotic combatives, he keeps his teaching focused on KunTao Silat deThouars.
KunTao Silat deThouars is an art that combines old school kuntao with silat. Creating a system that is both simple and direct and deep and content-rich. Featuring knowledge and skills forged in one of the world’s most violent crucibles, KTS is known for it’s elegant simplicity. It is a true martial art from a people that had to use it to survive, not in some distant past, but in this generation.
